7 Environmental Choices for Birch Grove Cabin

What environmental choices are integral to Birch Grove Cabin?

Our cabin has been designed and built for lower environmental impact - starting with the locally sourced timber frame and cladding. Read on to find out more about our choices.

  • Cabin structure: The building is highly thermally insulated with the timber frame sourced and manufactured by Norscot Joinery Ltd, Caithness, Scotland. The timber cladding is Scottish larch sourced from Cromartie Timber, Strathpeffer, Ross-shire.

  • Energy and solar photo voltaic (pv) panels : The cabin is on a 100% renewable energy tariff. All light bulbs are LED. Our energy efficiency rating (EPC) is B 89, the environmental impact rating (CO2) is B 91. Solar pv panels on the roof generate electricity with surplus energy supplied back to the main power grid.

  • Log stove and fire wood : The log stove is a UK manufactured Charnwood Aire 5 made from British steel. It is super efficient A+ rated with 84% efficiency. Fire wood for the log stove is sourced sustainably and future supplies are being grown on the property through natural regeneration of native trees.

  • Waste water and sewage treatment : A self-contained drainage system processes waste water and sewage, this discharges harmlessly through a soakaway system.

  • Toiletries and cleaning products: Use of eco-friendly toiletries and cleaning products support our self contained waste water system. Our products are bought in bulk bottles to refill smaller ones for guest use.

  • Waste and recycling : Systems are in place and information is available to guests for sorting and recycling waste.

  • Biodiversity : We have undertaken planting and maintenance on the property to encourage wildlife, along with habitat and refuge creation. Examples include: new naturally regenerated birch woodland, wildflower areas, bird boxes, bat boxes, bug hotels and management of invasive weeds.
